Being Mulatto in America Essay -- Race Racial Differences
Circle of Color There are many different races in the United States of America, "mulatto" being just one of them. As a child mixed with both the black and white races, I have a "complete" view of the lives of both cultures; I feel as complete as a circle is in its unending symmetry. I am free from racism and have the power of relating to both races with a sense of belonging. I am aware that I cannot go somewhere and say I am white, but I can relate to whites just as easily as blacks. Color is a fiction, nothing more than a distraction to keep us from noticing how things look in the light. Due to their immensely different pasts, the two races have a hard time relating to one another, which keeps us apart as people. I have had to deal with a lot of racism in my lifetime, more so from my family than anywhere else. I have been disliked and not "accepted" by my grandparents and great aunts and uncles, some of whom I have never met, due to the color of my skin. My first-hand experience with racism and dealing with it effectively has made me a better, more complete person. The point of my writing this essay is to hopefully open oneââ¬â¢s eyes to realize EVERYONE is equal. When I was a three-year-old little girl I was removed from the care of my natural mother and given to my stepmother, Dora. Dora was a young, caring woman who gave me the life that any child deserves, a stable life of discipline with a lot of love. The strong-minded, yet loving, personality I have is from being around Dora. She cares for people as a whole; I have never heard a racist remark come from her mouth. Although Dora is a black woman, her raising me could not have been any better. Dora is one of seven children, so "family" surrounded me at al... ...t whole. I mean that if you are white, more than likely you were raised in a white family and the same with any other race. Such an individual would have the disadvantage of not knowing what the next race is truly like and therefore is lacking social "wholeness." In this world of ours, one needs to know how to deal with, talk to, and relate to all races of people. One cannot be intimidated by the next individual because of lack of knowledge of his background. Socially, I have an advantage, I know what to say, when to say it, and who to say it to. No one can be taught how to deal with "different" people. It is through experience and an open mind that one learns their most valuable lesson in life: everyone can encounter the same misfortunes, yet the dignity you display in dealing with them greatly effects the outcome and aids in completing the "circle of color." Psychotherapy is a psychological technique that can bring about positive changes in personality, behavior, or personal adjustment (Coon & Mitterer,2013). There are many therapies that help people learn how to be more positive and helps a person adjust the way they behave or look at themselves. The Three types of psychotherapies that this paper will summarize by discussing the main tenets of each therapy, their effectiveness in treating psychological disorders, and their strengths are existence therapy, cognitive therapy, and Rational-emotive behavior therapy. Existence therapy focuses on the problems of existence, such as meaning, choice, and responsibility, it also promotes self-knowledge, as well as emphasizes free will, the human ability to make choices(). This type of therapy is effective in treating depression and feeling like ones has no self-worth, or meaning in life. When existential therapy is successful, it brings about a renewed sense of purpose and a reappraisal of whatââ¬â¢s important in life. Some clients even experience an emotional rebirth, as if they had survived a close brush with death (Coon & Mitterer,2013). The next one is cognitive therapy, this type of therapy focuses on helping clients change thinking patterns that lead to troublesome emotions or behaviors. The aim is to teach clients how to cope with anger, depression, shyness, stress, and similar problems. This type of therapy is as effective as taking drugs when treating many cases of depression. It helps a person adopt new thinking patterns which often helps to reduce the chances of being depressed again, drugs do not have this effect (Coon & Mitterer,2013). The last one that will be discussed in this paper is also in the cognitive therapy family itââ¬â¢s known as the Ration-Emotive Behavior therapy or REBT for short. This therapy attempts to change irrational beliefs that causeà emotional problems. According to psychologist people become unhappy and develop self-defeating habits because they have unrealistic or faulty beliefs. In order to fight depression psychologists attacks a personââ¬â¢s logic, challenge their thinking, and confront them with evidence contrary to their beliefs (Coon & Mitterer,2013). In the end REBT is supposed to help a person realize that they bring themselves down be thinking irrationally. Psychologists may ask the patient questions like, ââ¬Å"Where is the evidence that you are a loser just because you didnââ¬â¢t do well this one time?â⬠Once challenged by this question the patient will learn to understand that the more rational belief about oneââ¬â¢s self is, mistakes happen, and the best thing one can do is learn from the mistake. Lord of the Flies Essay
Statement Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the prosecution will prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the defendant, Jack Merridew, is guilty of two counts of murder. We will show that Mr. Merridew was fully responsible for the deaths of Simon and Piggy when the boys were stranded on an island without adult supervision. We will show that Jack quickly became a sadistic savage who believed that the rules and laws of civilization did not apply to him. He constantly fought against and disobeyed Ralph who was the democratically elected leader of the boys. He valued killing above all other activities and constantly tried to convince the other boys to follow him and not listen to Ralph. Although the circumstances surrounding Simonââ¬â¢s death were accidental, the prosecution will show that Jackââ¬â¢s behavior caused the boys to act as killers. Jack ruled his boys through fear and he made them follow him because they believed that he could protect them. We will show that Jack knew that the beast was not real but he pretended it was so that all the boys would continue to be afraid. One of Jackââ¬â¢s strategies to make the boys feel braver was that he created the death chant, ââ¬Å"kill the beast, cut his throat, spill his blood. â⬠Also Jack created the dance where a boy pretended to be a pig while all the other boys stood around him and pretended to spear him to death. It was in the middle of this crazed dance that Simon stumbled out from the jungle and all the boys fell upon him and killed him. The prosecution will also present evidence that shows that Jack was responsible for Piggyââ¬â¢s death. Shortly after the boys crashed, Jack broke Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses making Piggy even more helpless than he already was. Then Jack raided Ralphââ¬â¢s camp and stole Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses. This final act was a death sentence for Piggy because without his specs he could not see the rock tumbling down the mountain towards him that killed him. The prosecution will also show that from the very beginning Jackââ¬â¢s hatred of Piggy influenced all the boys. Jack hated Piggy because Piggy was fat and physically weak. Jack believed in the law of the jungle, which states that only the strong survive. Jack makes up the chant ââ¬Å"kill the pigâ⬠and this chant always causes the boys to be frenzied, crazed, unthinking savages. ââ¬Å"Kill the pigâ⬠could be seen as being close to ââ¬Å"kill the piggyâ⬠so itââ¬â¢s not a surprise when Piggy is finally killed. Piggy wants Ralph to remain the leader because he knows that he is protected and wonââ¬â¢t be hurt by Jack as long as Ralph is the leader. When Piggy is killed, Ralph is no longer the leader and after Piggy dies Jack screams ââ¬Å"thatââ¬â¢s what youââ¬â¢ll getâ⬠and he throws his spear at Ralph. Questions for Witnesses Ralph 1. Closing Statement Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, we believe that the constitution has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the defendant, Jack Merridew, is a sadistic bully without conscience or regard for the laws and appropriate behavior that are part of civilized society. Jack chose to be a savage criminal on this island. He disobeyed Ralphââ¬â¢s rules that provided structure and order. Ralph was the elected leader and Jack intentionally broke away from this group and formed his own tribe of savage hunters. He ruled this group through fear and physical violence. The boys of Jackââ¬â¢s tribe paid no attention to morals or good behavior. They simply did what they wanted to do and never stopped to say to themselves, ââ¬Å"Is this a good way to behave? â⬠or ââ¬Å"is this right? â⬠From the beginning Jack was a boy who was obsessed with hunting and killing pigs. Then he became a complete savage and the sport of hunting pigs became boring. He needed more excitement so he invented the sport of hunting and killing human beings. You the jury have the responsibility to render a verdict of guilty for two counts of murder. Jack is responsible for the deaths of Simon and Piggy. It is true that he did not push the rock down the mountain that killed Piggy. But he was responsible for creating a tribe of boys who no longer had good moral behavior and who didnââ¬â¢t value human life. It is true that Jack alone that Jack did not kill Simon. But he was responsible for creating the frenzied crazed behavior through his chant and dance that led to Simonââ¬â¢s death. Jack is guilty of murder. The prosecution rests.
Adolescents and Cyberspace Essay
Abstract The Internet has a great deal of benefit in our lives. It is the window that opens onto the world and shows us everything that is happening around us. Although it is meant to help and support our needs, enrich our social lives and expand our civic connections, it has not been going so far in this way. A lot of research is showing that the heavy use of cyberspace is isolating people form the world around them. Knowing that adolescents are spending a great deal of their time in cyberspace, this article will examine the things they miss when they are left to grow up in it. Leaving Adolescents Grow Up in Cyberspace The question on whether leaving adolescents grow up in cyberspace is beneficial or not has long been controversial. When a lot agree that cyberspace has made their life easier, many others believe the opposite. Everything has side effects, which might have great impact on its user if not handled properly. It seems that adolescents, out of all other people, all missing a lot when their parents are letting them grow up in cyberspace. Everything in this advanced world is possible these days, thatââ¬â¢s why we find students who study on the Internet in hybrid or online courses. Traditionally, learning has been assumed to take place in a classroom or face-to-face environment where the instructor and students are physically together, but not all students learn the same way and therefore the traditional approach is not ideal for all students (Young, 2007). This is true, but a lot of students are finding it difficult to cope with the new and modern way of learning, where the instructor lectures them online. Some students say: -ââ¬Å"Instructor feedback tend to be slowâ⬠-ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t feel as part of the classâ⬠-ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t verbalize your thoughts and let others hear your ideasâ⬠-ââ¬Å"Too many technical problemsâ⬠-ââ¬Å"Unreliable Internet connections from my Internet service providerâ⬠-ââ¬Å"You also lose the personal teacher student relationshipâ⬠-ââ¬Å"No way to read body languageâ⬠-ââ¬Å"With on-line classes, it is hard to be able to get the whole ââ¬Å"personalâ⬠thingâ⬠-ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t get to see the professor or class members face-to-faceâ⬠-ââ¬Å"It takes more time to e-mail or post a question on the discussion board and wait for a responseâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Studentsââ¬â¢ Positive and Negative Experience in Hybrid and Online Classesâ⬠, 2007, page). Moreover, Irvine(2004) states: ââ¬Å"Assignments are dispersed online. Students are much more likely to do research online than use a library. And even class handouts have gone the way of the Web, posted on electronic bulletin boards for downloading after classâ⬠(p.31A). So, if the Internet connection went off, students wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to continue their work. When the computer server in Emory University went down for a few hours one evening, a lot of people were at loose ends, they couldnââ¬â¢t to their homework (Sridharan, 2004). This is how adolescents are missing the more active and efficient way of learning because of cyberspace, thus suffering from a lot of educational and studying problems they are better off without. Looking at the world today would make us realize how much we miss security. And since adolescents are widely using cyberspace, they are the most likely to get affected by what it generates. A lot of teenagers have no problem in making friends, of whom theyââ¬â¢ve never seen. In fact, they see that it is one of the purposes of using the Internet. But they never realize how dangerous it could be to meet someone you havenââ¬â¢t actually seen. The Internet allows people to communicate with people who are different from them, people in another country or kids at school they donââ¬â¢t talk to. This access of information is so easy, but of course there is a dark side to having such broad access: it gives identity thieves and sexual predators a new place to look for victims (Stern, 2004). Also, the Internet has shaped the way adolescents work, live, and relax. It has even created new ways for them to express themselves which might be liberating and fun but can also become a forum for of pettiness and criminal exploitation (Irvine, 2004). Furthermore, Ian and Walder (2005) say: As we have become dependent on the Internet, as the network of networks, so we have become vulnerable to criminal and terrorist networks that use cyberspace as a means to undermine and circumvent state control. Protecting against those that wish to attackà the integrity, confidentiality and availability of systems and data they process, is primarily an issue of implementing appropriate security measures. (page) The main purpose for this worry is because adolescents are unaware of what criminals might do to take advantage of people who want to be friendly, allowing them to threaten the countryââ¬â¢s and societyââ¬â¢s safety. In this way letting them spend too much time in cyberspace is making them loose a lot of security which puts them in dangerous problems later on. We must not forget the most important consequence of growing up in cyberspace: lack of social life and relationships. Sitting in front of the monitor for several continuous hours, without even noticing how time flies by quickly, makes us never want to get off the chair. As many adolescents are living in virtual communities, their only concern is making friends online. Ten years ago, social theorists were suggesting that the Internet would revolutionize social relationships (Carter & Denise M., 2004). Now, the Internet has come a far distance that kids and teens canââ¬â¢t live without it; people can find a job without leaving their desks, shop online without going to the mall and communicate with others without meeting face-to-face by e-mails, online chat rooms and instant messages. So, all the activities that were done with family and friends, are being done alone on the Internet. As a result, such activities have proved to be more isolating than watching television, which friends and family often do in groups, and the time spent with them is decreasing a lot in the presence of the Web. In addition, teens are preferring not to go out for walks or hang out with friends because they are busy in their own larger world. Know it or not, youngsters who are allowing time online to replace face-to-face interaction are being isolated from the real world and are being trapped in the virtual world (Staples, 2004). Seemingly, ââ¬Å"Teenagers who spend much of their lives hunched over computer screens miss the socializing, the real world experience that would allow them to leave adolescence behind and grow into adulthood. These vital experiences, like much else, are simply not available in a virtual formâ⬠(Staples, 2004, p.A29). All of this is breaking the social relationships and is bringing up adults that donââ¬â¢t know how to deal with others because they never had the chance to sit and talk face-to-face. A lot of people fear of not being able to go with the flow; who ever doesnââ¬â¢t have access to cyberspace doesnââ¬â¢t have a life. But this isnââ¬â¢t proved to be completely true since itââ¬â¢s not being used in the best and efficient way. Of course itââ¬â¢s the parents job to lead them to the right track; they should always keep them under high supervision. To be more specific, parents should encourage them to have a real life, make real friends, go to real places and spend quality time with family. This doesnââ¬â¢t mean getting rid of this great technology but not letting it control them. Indeed, adolescents are missing a lot of the real world and its content, and arenââ¬â¢t aware of the circumstances and the costs of growing up in cyberspace.
